Structured Thoughts on Artistry and Novel-Making
Review: The Poet Empress
Verdict: Cinderella retelling with a wicked bent. I came to enjoy it. Started off without much dynamic uniqueness, but it really came around to refreshingly bold by the end.
Review: The Second Death of Locke
Verdict: DNF at 82%. A revolving door of tropes with no single one lingering long enough to make an impact.
Dueling Authors: Bardugo’s Ninth House v Black’s Book of Night
Leigh Bardugo and Holly Black, both well-established players in the YA Fantasy and now Adult Fantasy genres, have made little secret of their friendship and creative partnership over the last few years. But though their careers have followed similar trajectories, one author is pulling away with her most recent works.
Review: Daughter of the Moon Goddess
Who would I recommend Daughter of the Moon Goddess to? Someone with the patience of Job. It’s got a squillion gushing reviews on Amazon, that great aggregator of mediocrity, so I guess someone out there likes having all their thoughts placed into their heads for them.
Review: The Bog Wife
The book is as light as a feather as far as its ethereal and allegorical deftness. Beautiful prose all the way through, like a creeping vine. Graceful, dare I say elegant, even as it describes a bunch of gross stuff.
Review: Priory of the Orange Tree
I must be even more contrary than my mother claims, because I confess I did not find the experience of reading the Priory to be anything like what was promised, and the more I’ve reflected on it after finishing the more disgruntled I’ve become with its notoriety.
In utero and in years.
But now there are no more men. I am the only one left standing. And there are no more holes, to condone or to cover. Only a damn good book.
